ON EAST AFRICA

East Africa is not one story. Thousands of stories are moving at once.

The East Africa we know cannot be reduced to animals, lodges and famous views. It begins in kitchens, workshops, markets, farms and family homes. With cooks, makers, designers, historians and conservationists who help us see the region from the inside.

Here, history is not kept behind glass. It is cooked. Worn. Shaped.

“

I didn’t realize how much of my picture of Africa came from old images and assumptions. I expected the wildlife and extraordinary landscapes. What I didn’t expect was the energy, the creativity, the food, the design and the ambition. I came away realizing how much of the real story we simply aren’t shown.

THE ETHOS

Meaningful travel is shaped by more than where you go.

It is shaped by why you are going, what you have the chance to experience, and whose hands you are in along the way.

That idea informs everything that follows — from the purpose of the trip, to the moments that give it depth, to the people who help a place come alive.

homeetho

We need different things from travel at different moments.

Sometimes we need to rest. Sometimes we want to understand. Sometimes we need to step outside our usual world and return seeing ourselves, our work or what might be possible differently.

The most memorable experiences are rarely the most obvious ones.

They are not necessarily hidden or exclusive. They are often the moments that reveal something deeper — why a meal matters, what a landscape carries, when to linger, and when to change the plan because something better is unfolding.

Whose hands you are in changes everything.

A remarkable property can be booked. A famous view can be reached. But the people around you make a place legible. They give context to what you are seeing, help you notice what you would otherwise miss, and often become the part you remember most.

THE FOUNDER

I have never been very good at traveling like a tourist.

For more than two decades, my work has taken me across five continents. Along the way, I followed the interesting invitation, stayed longer than planned, asked too many questions, and got to know the people behind the place.

“For years, I thought I was collecting extraordinary experiences. I wasn’t. I was collecting people.”

Those relationships changed how I understood East Africa — and eventually became the foundation of The Odyssey Collective.
